Keeping the PERSON in Personalized Learning
The world is truly at our fingertips with literally thousands of applications and resources available on the web. While it is tempting to think that one prescribed plan will work for all children, we need to remember to keep the person as the focus in personalized learning.
Addition with PECs
The following video links highlight one child that truly changed not only my perspective, but also my life. In this clip the chlid demonstrates his understanding of simple math facts with the implementation of a low tech communication device.
Defying Limitations
As you saw in the first video, this child is definitely proficient with PECs. Unfortunately this communication system is arduous and has its limits. Once we identified the limitations of this system, we began to explore other options for the child to communicate while implementing highly reinforcing motivators. You will notice that while the child prefers an elbow prompt when communicating, he does in fact have letter, and word identification with complete independence.
